FOREWORD
OIE'01 (The 4th Japanese-Finnish Joint Symposium of Optics In Engineering) will be held in Osaka, Japan, in October 2001. It is an international joint meeting that follows up the line of a series of symposia "Optics in engineering" that have been held, so far, in Lappeenranta 1995, in Tsukuba 1997, and in Kajaani 1999.
Optics is an old and venerable subject that was always rejuvenated by emergence of new disciplines. For example, the rapid progress and increasing interests in fields such as nanophotonics and biophotonics are far exceeding the expectation, which may bring numerous industrial opportunities. The aim of the series of symposia is to provide a timely forum for presenting the latest novel and innovative works on new physics, technologies and device applications in optics related fields, and promote the interaction between Japanese and Finnish scientists who are working in the fields of pure and applied optics.

TECHNICAL SESSIONS
The technical program will consist of parallel sessions of oral and poster presentations. The oral presentations include invited talks on the recent topical and significant progress.

A PC projector and an OHP are prepared as standard facilities for presentation. Poster boards are 90 cm wide and 210 cm high. The official language will be English, which will be used for all printed materials, presentations and discussions.
The workshop covers, but not limited to, topics as follows:

    Imaging and Image Processing
Laser Science and Engineering Fundamentals, Measurements, Design, and Applications
    Semiconductor Lasers and Related Devices
Quantum Optics, Laser Spectroscopy and Their Applications
    Nonlinear Optics
    Optical Material and Fabrication Techniques
    Micro-Optics, Integrated and Guided-Wave Optics
Optical Switching, Computing and Information Processing
    Optical Data Storage
Laser Chemistry, Materials Processing and Industrial Applications
    Medical and Biological Applications
Nano-Optics,  including Near-field Optics in Biology and Chemistry
    Novel Optics, including Photonic Crystals
    Industrial Applications

The 2-page summary must be written on 8 1/2 in. × 11 in. or A4-sized white bond paper, typed single spaced on one side only within 17 cm × 24 cm. The title of the paper, author's name, affiliation, complete return address, telephone number, facsimile number and e-mail address (if available) must appear at the top of the first page. Clear tables, line drawings, and photographs can be included anywhere in the 2-page summary. If the paper is accepted, the manuscript will appear in a technical digest.
